New sports strategy game studio opens in Montréal; simultaneously launches operations in Europe

Studio Qi launches its first game and enters into partnership with London-based company to promote its platform in Europe.

MONTREAL (Quebec) – November 19, 2014 –Phéromone, a Montreal-based design and technology company, announced the creation of Studio Qi. The new studio, a spin-off dedicated to the development of social sports strategy games, also announced the commercial launch of its first game, Virtual Leagues of Hockey (VLH), and its first international partnership with London-based SAHY Digital Sports, now its affiliated partner in Switzerland, Russia and Sweden.

“After two years of R&D and a year of beta testing, it’s with real enthusiasm that we launch Studio Qi today,” stated Mr. Yves Lapierre, president of the new company. “VLH is the first product created by our new studio, following a $2 million equity investment with the participation of the Canada Media Fund (CMF). The enthusiasm shown by the 12,000 players who signed up during the test period gives us a clear indication that our platform meets a significant demand, a niche untapped until now,” added Mr. Lapierre.

Through its Experimental Stream, the CMF invested almost $1 million in VLH. “The Canada Media Fund is pleased to support the creation of Studio Qi’s first game. The projects financed by our experimental program have to be state-of-the-art and present digital content that promises to stand out on a national and international scale. The “Virtual Leagues” are in step with our goal to contribute to the success of innovative, social and high-quality games,” stated Mr. Stéphane Cardin, vice-president, public affairs and industry relations, CMF.
